Garment Making on an Overlocker Autumn/Winter 2024 Dates
Garment Making on an Overlocker
During this six-week course you will learn how to make your own clothes using your own overlocker and how to get a professional finish on all your garments. You will gain a basic understanding of your overlocker as well as learning lots of techniques, including overlocking seams, shoulder seams, applying neckbands and different types of finishes, etc.You will choose your own pattern and work on your own garment at your own pace; you can choose either woven or knit fabric, the choice is yours. You will also learn basic fitting adjustments, including lengthening and shortening, bust adjustments, etc.
Please note: limited places are available as class numbers will be kept low to ensure you get the most out of the class.
Equipment Required
• Your own overlocker and the accessories that came with it, including the instruction book. Please don’t forget the foot control and power lead!
• Spare needles
• Pattern paper
• Fabric marker
• Basic sewing kit, to include cutting out scissors (or a rotary cutter if you prefer), pins, tape measure, tacking thread, hand sewing needles, etc.
• Pattern – so that you can master lots of techniques we suggest you don’t choose an overcomplicated design
• Fabric as per pattern
• Overlocking threads to match your fabric – advice on choosing threads will be given in the class
• A notebook and pen
About the tutor – Catherine Crew
Catherine Crew has been a valuable part of the Coles shop team for over 10 years. Along with being part of our shop floor staff, Catherine teaches overlocker courses for new owners, as well as more advanced techniques for people who have been using their overlockers for longer. Since 2019 Catherine has studied for Level 2 City and Guilds diplomas in Tailoring and Pattern Cutting and gained distinctions in both; she has also completed a teaching course for adults at Nottingham Trent University.
