Modern Sampler Quilt

This quilt is a standard construction with blocks and borders. The blocks are designed as a teaching programme, so that you will learn a variety of standard patchwork techniques. These are then put together and borders added, before laying-up, quilting and binding. It will take approximately 10 sessions to complete.

It’s best to start with a background fabric and a few varied colours. If you are new to selecting colours, choose a patterned fabric that you like, then look for colours to pull from that.

Because the blocks are quite large (10”) you can look at bigger pattern designs. Consider value – a mix of lighter and darker fabrics to give contrast (the tutor can guide you on this).

You will no doubt add to your fabrics as you go along, so start with a few fat quarters and 3 metres of background fabric.

Patterns and templates for individual blocks are provided by the tutor.

As your quilt progresses, you will also need:

Each quilt will have its own individual requirements, which the tutor will advise you on as your quilt progresses.

And don't forget your basic sewing equipment, to include:

  • Rotary cutter and a sharp blade
  • Quilting rulers, ideally one 6½” x 24” and a square ruler 6½” or 8½”
  • Cutting mat (we do have a small amount number of mats to for you to use but bringing your own may save you waiting)
  • Scissors
  • Stitch unpicker
  • Pins
  • Pencil
  • Fabric marker (water soluble or Frixion pen)
  • Pre-wound bobbin (white)

Husqvarna owners may also wish to bring the following:

  • Green bobbin (these can be purchased individually in the shop)
  • 1/4” piecing foot
  • Open toe appliqué foot
  • Walking foot
  • Free motion spring foot
