Urban Folk Sampler Quilt

The first sections you will tackle are “coffee pot”, “love” and “home”. Gilli can provide the alternatives “dog breeds” and “shoes” if preferred, with enough notice.

You will need:

  • A selection of fat quarters or half metres of a range of colours and mixed prints and textured plains.
  • Gilli started with a basic group of colours drawn from traditional Amish quilts: aubergine, mid grey, fuchsia, apple green, yellow ochre, teal blue and beige, plus a modern floral fabric which had all of these colours in it. She then collected variations on these colours – a lighter grey, a deeper maroon, lime green, magenta, orange, turquoise, etc.
  • Any combinations will work, but keep any strong patterns to a minimum in this quilt, to show off the shapes and applique stitching
  • Threads – rayons, plain cottons, etc. in a variety of colours to match and contrast. Standard weights, 40 – 50wt.
  • Thread for piecing, to blend with the colour scheme: mid-grey or taupe work well. 50 – 60wt.
  • Stitch’n’Tear
  • Bondaweb

Eventually you will need wadding, border and backing materials. The measurement for these will be provided in class.

  • Rotary cutter
